The Department of Medicine in The Robert Larner, MD College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) seek an outstanding physician/scientist with a record of significant contributions in academic hematology-oncology to serve as Division Chief for Hematology and Oncology. Reporting to the Chair of Medicine and working in collaboration with the division chiefs of the Department’s 13 other subspecialties, the new Chief will oversee and further develop the Division’s outstanding clinical service, educational, and research programs. Over time, there will be opportunity for an expanded leadership role in the University of Vermont Cancer Center (UVMMC).
The Chief will lead a division of 17 faculty, 5 advanced practice providers, and 6 fellows, all committed to excellence in clinical care. Serving more than one million patients in Vermont and northern New York, this team of dedicated professionals provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to people affected by cancer and blood disorders in collaboration with radiation therapy, surgery, pathology and laboratory medicine, radiology, and a range of cancer support services.
Research is an important part of the Division’s work, with faculty conducting clinical, translational, epidemiological, and basic science research. Strong collaborative research opportunities exist with rapidly growing and established programs in Health Services Research, Environmental Pathology, Genomics, Cardiovascular Disease, Thrombosis and Pulmonary Medicine.
Together, the UVM College of Medicine and UVMMC comprise the only tertiary/quaternary academic medical center in Vermont and offer state-of-the-art clinical, research, and educational facilities. UVMMC is part of the University of Vermont Health Network Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT; Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, VT; Champlain Valley Physicians’ Hospital in Plattsburgh, NY; Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, NY; and Elizabethtown Hospital in Elizabethtown, NY.

The ideal candidate will be a physician board certified or eligible in hematology and/or oncology with a proven commitment to clinical care, medical education, training subspecialty fellows and research. S/he will be a seasoned clinician with an established research program who brings a strong track record for the mentoring of faculty at all stages of career development. Experience in leading cancer clinical trials will be an asset. Evidence of leadership skills and experience, and a desire to assume expanded responsibilities over time will be important. It is expected that candidates will have credentials appropriate for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (tenure pathway) at the University of Vermont.
