Dean, College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences
University of Vermont

University of Vermont invites inquiries, nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Dean of the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS). This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the College, taking full advantage of new facilities, new energies, new partnerships, and new opportunities on the campus and throughout the state.

The University of Vermont is experiencing transformative change under the visionary and dynamic leadership of President E. Thomas Sullivan and Provost David Rosowsky (an engineer and a former engineering dean). The University has undertaken a tremendously successful comprehensive fundraising campaign (scheduled to conclude in 2019), extensive campus construction that includes two new STEM buildings (part of the University’s new STEM Complex), and the launch of new undergraduate and graduate academic programs, many of which are transdisciplinary and involve faculty from multiple colleges.

The next CEMS Dean will be in a unique position to build upon this upward trajectory and leverage the university’s strong disciplinary expertise. One of ten colleges and schools at the University of Vermont, CEMS includes departments and programs in engineering, computer science, and mathematical sciences. These include civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, computer science and information systems, complex systems and data sciences, mathematics, and statistics. CEMS is a highly transdisciplinary and collaborative college of faculty and programs, with deep connections to virtually every other college at the University including the Larner College of Medicine (and the UVM Medical Center, also located on-campus). The College is home to 1,333 undergraduates, 150 graduate students, 122 full- and part-time faculty, and 29 staff members.

The College’s enrollments have increased significantly in recent years and are anticipated to continue to grow at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The College is on sound financial footing, and both its budget and success in fundraising have supported and enabled continued strategic growth and investment. The College is also embarking on a major faculty hiring initiative over the next several years. The new Dean will be expected to strategically shepherd this growth, manage finances, develop new revenues, recruit and support distinguished faculty members, and build innovative academic programs.

UVM seeks a Dean a distinguished scholar-educator with a track record of successful academic and administrative leadership, experience in institutional planning and enrollment management, particularly international enrollment, advancing diversity, curriculum innovation, program assessment, fiscal management, and policy and technology development. The Dean must have a balanced appreciation for engineering, computer science, and mathematics, as well as an aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration across the University and a desire to work collegially to promote UVM’s collective goals. In addition, s/he must have an ability and desire to engage in securing external funding for the activities and programs of the College. A record of fundraising, philanthropic development, and securing other forms of external funding is preferred. An earned doctorate in a related academic discipline and a stellar record of teaching and scholarship, as evidenced through earned promotion to full professor, are required for this role.

The University of Vermont is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
Applications from women, veterans, individuals with disabilities and people from diverse racial,
ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged.

Inquiries, nominations and candidate materials, including a CV and cover letter describing professional background and qualifications, can be sent in confidence to consultants Brian Bloomfield and Robert Luke via email to The position will remain open until filled, but for the convenience of the committee, materials should be received by February 23, 2018. The recruitment will be conducted in confidence until finalists are invited for campus visits at which time professional references will be contacted.
